Looking to make a huge change in your life? Does the thought of this particular change overwhelm you? Perhaps you’re suffering from tunnel vision: you’re only focused on the amazing results ahead and have no set plan for achieving the goal. It’s perfectly normal to desire something different or new, but it’s the patience part that causes us problems.
Usually, if you’re preparing to step out and better some aspect of yourself, you’re initially excited about success and the lasting effects. However, significant change can require quite a bit of planning and endurance. Learning to develop stepping stones and to value the process will help you remain positive and enjoy the journey.
As you get started, it can feel as if you’re lowering your expectations by breaking the objective into individual parts. But look at it this way instead: you’re taking the time to oversee the entire mission and to manage the expectations. You’re being realistic about your timeline and the outcome.
Celebrating Small Victories
More than likely, you won’t achieve your dream overnight. You might even find that a different kind of shift is in order at first―a change in your overall outlook. Attitude is certainly a factor in accomplishment. If you approach small tasks with positive energy, you will meet your goals with a smile and discover meaning in the little things.
Quitting something cold-turkey isn’t easy. Further, deciding where, when, how, and why to begin walking your new path can be daunting. Planning a road to success is your best bet. Take your time, and don’t speed. Include pit-stops and anticipate the unexpected. Trust that, though setbacks are inevitable, there will be times for celebration.
When you choose to see the importance in conquering a single step, you are carving a healthy trail for yourself. You’re growing more than you know. Your life can become less about past failures and present insecurities; it can become more about your immense potential. Make it your mission to complete the small steps. Treasure those victories.
More Than You Imagined
An old Chinese proverb says, “It is better to take many small steps in the right direction than to make a great leap forward only to stumble backward.” Indeed, there’s so much value in mapping out your pathway to success and in the seemingly insignificant day-to-day grind.
You can wake with the sun, work toward your goal, and lie down at night knowing that you are actively pursuing your dream. What’s more, you’re building confidence. You’re seeing that difficulties arise, but perseverance crushes them. Ironically, you’re finding strength in moments of vulnerability and openness.
You only want to accomplish this one thing, right? But along the way, you’re bound to collect so many skills and unique experiences. In the end, all the small steps you’ve taken toward your goal truly do add up. You’ll discover that you’re better all-around.
Asking for Help
Occasionally, some of your stepping stones will involve an action with which many of us struggle. You’ll have to ask for help. For whatever reason, you’ll find that you’re lacking in experience or expertise. Don’t be discouraged when this happens. Consider it as a chance to build friendships, to cultivate community, and to learn.
You may believe that needing help is a sign of weakness. On the contrary, it takes great courage to be vulnerable and to accept challenging advice. It takes a kind of honesty with yourself to acknowledge that you should call on a seasoned professional or mature friend. It’s a step you’re perhaps hesitant to take, but more often than not, it’s a move you’ll never regret.
