4 morning motivators to get up and get creative

For a long time, I tried to operate under the delusion that I’m a morning person. The truth looked much different. Lying in bed until noon was one of my favorite things to do! However, I knew it was important to my freelancing career to get straight up in the morning.

In the beginning, I had a difficult time finding motivation. It felt more momentarily gratifying to stay in bed, even though I knew I’d feel guilty and have to work later. Eventually, I realized I needed to make getting up more enjoyable. The next 6 months were a grand experiment in how to get myself motivated in the AM.

To save you some time, here are 4 helpful ways I’ve found to get out of bed and get creative!

 

1. Get on the Mat

One thing that gets me out of bed and clears my head is yoga. Meeting on my mat regularly calms my morning anxiety, focuses my breath in my diaphragm, and prepares my body for a day at the desk. With mind and body aligned with purpose, I can better approach my day with openness and acceptance. Even the Mayo Clinic recommends yoga for reducing stress, increasing a sense of well-being, and improving sleep quality.

 

2. Practice Affirmations

Before I began the experiment, I enjoyed the occasional upbeat affirmation. Still, I had no idea how beneficial they can be when repeated regularly. After a few weeks of regular AM affirmations, my attitude about work and myself improved leaps and bounds. Now, I look forward to mornings and the resulting positivity. I also like to give myself little affirmation reality checks throughout the day as needed. They really help me when I feel stressed or unworthy.

 

3. Journal

I have always liked to journal in preparation for the day, but I didn’t always have the time. However, stream of consciousness writing does in a few minutes what could sometimes take me an hour. I like to give myself either 10 minutes or 2 pages worth of time to barf all my unedited thoughts on paper. This kind of growth exercise helps over-thinkers like myself release cyclic thoughts. Furthermore, a recent study found expressive writing helps your brain calm down and relax.

 

4. Watch a TED Talk

When I’m having an especially difficult day, I watch a TED talk to get me in a good headspace. These mini-lectures feature experts speaking on topics from creativity to motivation. When presented with facts, tips, and passion, I find it difficult to stay dormant in bed!

 

Get Up, Get Motivated, Get Creative

The most important thing I have learned over these past few months is the power of the mind. It is extremely good at coming up with clever excuses to justify my bad behavior! The good news is, you can train your mind to work for you. I hope my 4 suggestions help you get out of bed, get motivated, and get creative in the mornings!
